The News about the News

In order to wrap up our discussion about the news and the media, here's an interesting talk that I came across.

I'd like you to work on it as a listening exercise, although looking at the visuals in the presentation will definitely help:

A. Listen to the presentation, and answer the following points:

1. Compare the 'world land mass' map and the 'february 2007 news' map. What are they? What do they show?
2. Name some of the events that took place in February, 2007. Were they covered by the press?
3. Which news story monopolised press coverage during this time? Do some research about this. What does it tell you about society?
4. Explain why global news have become neglected. Provide statistics and examples.
5. When the speaker contrasts local TV news with websites such as Google News, what conclusion does she arrive at?

1- the frist world map shows the world divition that we all know. But the second one shows the world map in the way of how Americans news, I mean, on what news the American take care. They showed that American people focus on local news and not to much on international ones.

2- North Corea dismantle nuclear facilities, massing flooding in Indonesia, and the IPCC showed the concecuences of global warming and how it affects on human. No they were not, American press took more importance on the death of a famous woman than on all of this important news. Besides, they did not take care about this news because, for example, the usa is one of the principal CO2 emisors so it’s not convenient to them to show this news.

3- The death of Ann Nicole Smith or Victoria Lynn "Vickie" Hogan, a model/actriz whi worked for important magazines like Playboy. She died while she was staying in a casino hotel called Seminole Hard Rock Cafe, in Fort Lauderdale (Florida). Doctors said that she died while she was sleeping, she choked with her own vomit, such disgusting! I think about their society that, maybe she was a very important woman for the usa but they showed a kind of “ignorance” to the rest of the world just focusin only on this news and not covering others. I think that egocentrism on American people is a little bit high on their society.

4- One of the reasons is that the USA have reduced the foreign bureaus by a half. So they would have less information.

  2. 1) The first map shows de World based on the way it looks, based on the landmass, but in the second one how news shapes what Americans see. The map of February 2007 shows the number of seconds that American network and cable news organizations dedicated to new stories by country.
    2) A) North Korea agrees to dismantle nuclear facilities.
    B) There were massive flooding in Indonesia.
    C) In Paris, the IPCC released confirm the man´s impact on global warming.

The American press didn´t cover this events, they ignore them.

    3) The monopolies covered the death Anna Nicole Smith. It tell me that people don´t takes care about things that really are important around the world. They create his own world and do not go out of this one. We are egoist.
    4) I really don´t understand the question, but of what I had understand the reason Is that is more expensive to take care about news of others countrys.
    5) That they covered the same news.

  3. A. Listen to the presentation, and answer the following points:

    1. Compare the 'world land mass' map and the 'february 2007 news' map. What are they? What do they show?

The first map shows the geographic land of every country. The second map shows the size of every country if you would know it by the importance they're given in the news. They shows that the USA is considered the most important, while other countrys, such as Argentina, are completely forgotten.

    2. Name some of the events that took place in February, 2007. Were they covered by the press?

There were news about the disarming of nuclear weapons in Corea, a flooding in Indonesia, and a repot of global warming. They weren't covered because of other news, much less important, but easier to sell, because it was "gossip" news.

    3. Which news story monopolised press coverage during this time? Do some research about this. What does it tell you about society?
The story that monopolised the news was the death of Anna Nicole Smith. Aparently, she was an actress and playboy girl. This shows that the society asks for gossip and that people doesn't care about international problems.

    4. Explain why global news have become neglected. Provide statistics and examples.

Only 12% of the news are about international news. They have become neglected because it's cheaper to cover local and gossiping news, such as covering Britney Spear's life. Even Web's news show mostly that kind of news.

    5. When the speaker contrasts local TV news with websites such as Google News, what conclusion does she arrive at?

She concludes that the news websites talk about the same things local tv news do, and event comments that some news shows even copy or recycle web's news.
