Fever Pitch

In the previous post, you read an extract from Nick Hornby's Fever Pitch. The book was later turned into a film (or two films really, a British version, which is quite close to the book, and an American version, which is a loose adaptation). We are going to watch the last scenes from the film:

1) Which of the people in the video do you think represents the author?

2) Compare the two men's attitudes towards the match.

3) Research on the Internet the Liverpool vs Arsenal Final (1989). Why was this game so important/memorable?

4) What was the most memorable football match (or any other sports event) you remember? Why? What do you remember about it?

Please write your answers in a comment below.

  1. I think the author is represented by the man in a red shirt . I couldn't make up all of what they were saying though, so I'm not sure.

The man in red is quite pessimistic about the outcome of the match, and thinks they can't win, and does not want to watch the game. The man in yellow thinks they can win and doesn't want to miss a thing.

The match was so important because the two teams had aproximately the same points, and they were both on top of the first division. Also, to win, Arsenal had to score two goals, and made it in the last minute.

I don't like football or sports very much, so the football match I remember the most was nothing special. It was the world wide cup of 2010, the South korea vs Argentina match, I remember it because i had a very strange dream before it: in the dream, we lost 27-1, and everyone was very depressed. Later, Michael Jackson appeared in the middle of the field.I don't know why I dreamt that!

      Thanks for sharing your dream/anecdote!

  2. 1) Im not sure, I think it's the red one, I didn't understand it so much.
2)The man in yellow was more optimistic, and the one in red was quite pessimistic in order to say that they can't win the match.
3)Because it was the match between the top two teams in the first division and the teams were close enough on points for the match to act as a decider for the premier league championship. Arsenal needed to win the game by at least two goals to take this title.
4)I remember when my fauvorite soccer team won the championship on December 27th, 2001. When Racing Club won the first division championship after 35 years of non winning anything. It was a huge joy for me. It made me cry a lot I remember..

    1. In #1, what didn't you understand, the story or the video?
      I quite agree with #2-3
I do remember the 2001 tournament too, being a Racing supporter myself that year was certainly memorable :)

  3. 1) I think it's the red one although i couldn't understand all of what he was saying. It is confusing

    2) The actittudes of the man with red t-shirt is pessimistic because he doesn't like what he is watching. He seems to be not interested. On the other hand, the man with yellow t-shirt said that they should have gone to the match and also he thinks they can win.

    3) I saw a video and also I looked for information and I had found that both teams are really important and when in 1989 they had to played. they were with the same points (0) for all the match and in the last minute Arsenal won with two famous goals.

    4) Only I can remember a football match in 2006. It was the World cup in Germany and once, Argentina played with a team called "Serbia y Montenegro" and surprisingly Argentina scored 6 goals in minutes, it was awsome.

    1. Thanks, Malena.

Perhaps you found the accent confusing?
I do remember the match you mention in #4, it was great!

  4. 1)I think the red one, but it's a bit confused.

2)The man with red t-sshirt has a bad attitud in front of the match, he think he can`t win. instead the man with yellow t-shirt has good attitud.

3)I find that Arsenal had to beat championship rivals Liverpool by two clear goals or more to win the title; any other result would mean an eighteenth title for Liverpool. Arsenal, the away team, lead 1–0 at 90 minutes, and in the last minute of injury-time (91:22), Michael Thomas ran through the Liverpool defence and scored a dramatic goal to win the title for the Gunners. This match is often remembered for commentator Brian Moore's famous phrase "It's up for grabs now!" as Thomas ran through to score.

    4) I'll allways remember the football match in the world cap in 2006 when Argentina won Mexico. They were 1-1 and in te minute 99 Argentina scored a goal (Maxi Rodríguez). I was watching the match in Guadalupe Donelli's house with Julieta and we were very nervous.

  5. 1. It´s a bit confusing but for me the author is the man with red t-shirt.

    2. In the begginning of the video the men are nervous but quiet. When the team makes the first goal, the man in red shirt gets very nervous and upset everything. At the end of the video the men are exalted and happy.

    3. The information said that this match was important beacause both teams were with 0 points during the match, but in last minutes Arsenal won with 2 goals.

    4. I don´t remember any important match. But what I think is important for Argentines is the World Cup in 1978. We won and we were in a difficul political situation.

  6. 1)I think the man with the red t-shirt represents the author, because he couldn't bear to watch the football match when his team was losing. Plus, he ran down the stairs and then ran them up waiting for a ‘mystical’ thing to happen if he did so (this is what I supposed, anyway). That is why I think the man with the red t-shirt represents the author, because he seems more superstitious.

2)The man with the yellow t-shirt didn’t want to miss anything from the match; he wanted to watch every little detail. He was really optimistic about the results of the match and he thought they were going to win. The man with the red t-shirt seemed impatient to me. He was pessimistic about the match and he was struggling hard to see the match, he couldn’t bear to even imagine that his team would lose.

3)The match is considered to be the most dramatic conclusion to a league season in the history of the English game. Both teams were in the First Division and were close enough on points for the match to act as a decider for the First Division Championship. Arsenal needed to win the game by at least two goals to take the title, while Liverpool enjoyed home advantage and had won the FA Cup the previous weekend. Arsenal won 2–0, with a last-minute goal scored by Michael Thomas – the final goal, in the final minute, of the final game of the league season – giving them their ninth First Division title and denying Liverpool the chance of a second Double.

4)I really don’t like watching football. But I remembered that in the last World Cup 2010 we were obligated at school to watch the matches were Argentina played. I remembered that I didn’t want to go to watch the match, so I stayed in a little classroom far away from the one that the majority of the people were. Luckily, there were some girls that didn’t want to watch the match too and I talked a bit with them!

    1. Excelent analysis, Victoria.

I'm sorry to hear about your experience in #4, but you know how football generates a 'hype' that is hard to escape from, especially in our country!

    2. Yeah, I know! I don't blame people because they like football but it's just I don't like watching it. I don't have any problem playing it (although I'm not very good at playing football but I find it fun!) Anyway I agree when you say that football generates a kind of 'hype' in our country, people just seem to have a regression. I used to live near the Quilmes Stadium and used to see the way the people behave before the match. Maybe that's why I feel this way towards football!

    3. It's funny that you see it as a 'regression' (I guess you mean that people -usually men- behave like cavemen while watching matches.
Anyways, if you are interested in the topic from a sociological perspective, I suggest that you read Eric Hobsbawm's "The Invention of Tradition", where he poses the hypothesis that governments have used football - among other things- to create an illusion of patriotism, national unity, and so on.

  7. 1. for me the author is the man with red t-shirt.

    2. In the begginning of the video the men were nervous but When the team makes the first goal, the man in red shirt gets very upset and a little bit mad. At the end of the video they were verry happy.

    3. The information said is that the match was very dramatic because it was define on the last minutes.

4.i dont remember a lot of matches, but one i think it was important, beacuse i was very nervous with my friends, was the world war cup on 2006
