Back to Poe

I was told that you read Edgar Allan Poe's The Black Cat. With that in mind, I found a very interesting comic version of the story. Have a look (I suggest that you fullscreen for a better view):

Edgar Allan Poe's THE BLACK CAT by Bernie Wrightson & Archie Goodwin
What do you think about the version?
Do you think looking at the pictures helps you understand the story?

Is it how you had pictured it?
Do you know of any other artwork inspired by the story?

Write your answers in a comment below.

  1. I think it's a nice version. The drawing style fits the story nicely. I don't think the pictures are necessary to undertand completely the story, as E. A. Poe describes it very well.. Hoewever, it's a nice touch. Everything was as I pictured it, I think it's because of the ability that E. A. Poe had about creating a context and atmosphere in his texts. The one thing that wasn't as I expected was the figure of the cat in the wall, I imagined it to be much more subtle, maybe like a stain caused by the fire.
I don't know any comics or interpretations of this piece, but upon searching it in an art-oriented social network, I found this http://pika-la-cynique.deviantart.com/art/E-A-Poe-s-The-Black-Cat-68331478
I like it because it represents the story very well.

  3. i think that's a good version, the pictures are good, and you can imagine better the story, because you have some character's faces to identify.
I don't know much about comics because i don't like to read them..

  4. I really like this version, is nice and easy to understand, easier than the story we had read in class. The pictures are very interesting.

Yes, by looking only the pictures i can understand the story maybe this is because i already know it.

From what I have read, this is a bit different but if i had to choose i will choose this version, the other is too boring for me.

No, i don't know any other art work inspired by this story, i'm not interested in storyes like this one, and it's the first time i heared about this story named "The black cat"

    2. Ok, that's clear. It's weird that you hadn't heard of it, though... we usually read this story (a reduced version) in second or third year...

  6. I think this version is good,it has the suspense of the original story. Looking at the pictures help me a lot, most at the end, is quiet explicit.
The end of the story I did´t pictured like that but the rest of the story I imagined a little bit like that.
I don´t know any other version or artwork inspired by the story, is the fist time that I read The black Cat.

  7. I think that this version is very well adapted, the black and white drawings made a ‘darker’ atmosphere to the story and also help us to situate the time of the story (because Poe's writings were from 1840, and in that period of time all photos were black and white).
In my opinion, adding drawings into written stories can sometimes be a negative aspect, because the pictures set in your head how the characters would look like. I think it doesn’t help to develop one’s imagination.
Anyway, drawings really help to situate the reader into what's going on in the story, and can be really useful when the story is in a foreign language.
As regards the way I've imagined the story, the drawings are a lot like the way I've pictured it, but I've imagine the man and his wife like old people, I don't know why.
I don't know any artwork inspired by the story. But I know there had been a lot of films adaptations of “The Black Cat”.
Here is the first part of an adaptation of the story from a show called ‘Master of Horrors’ that has also adapted a lot of other Edgar Allan Poe’s stories: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tbqQDV2ezpc&feature=related

    1. I have to admit that I imagined the narrator a bit older too.
What an interesting film adaptation, too bad it was in Spanish! Thanks for sharing

  8. I think it's a very good version, very entertaining. It helps me a lot looking at the pictures instead of listened to it, like we did in class. I imagined some parts very similar, but another one very very different.
I don`t know of another artwork but I think that perhaps is possible that a film or a short film exists.

  9. I think that its an excelent version couse it shows the story from a new point of view that we havent seen yet! comics are really intresting and when i read this one i could understand better the story.
The pictures ilustrate all the story, so its easier to understand it and show us how the ilustrator wanted to see te story more darker and savage. it wasnt as i had pictured it.
I dont know any artwork but i would like to found a painting of it.
