Delete1)Which arguments for/against downloading music do they discuss? Do you agree or disagree?
ReplyDeleteThe arguments in favour of downloading music from the internet that are discussed are:
•According to Ed O’Brien, to download music from the internet in the spirit of discovering new music is not something that it’s essentially bad intentioned. Passive file shares should have a bit more of liberty in this area.
•New bands or unknown bands are getting to be known because of the file sharing system of the Internet. Also, I believe that this is a really good aspect for musicians, because it’s really difficult to get the people get to know their music, and file share makes things more fast and easy. Plus, people who really like their music would probably buy the cd to show their artists their support.
•There is a lot of evidence to show that the passive file shares actually spend a lot in the music industry themselves.
•People can be educated to can differentiate between what’s legal or not.
The arguments against download music from the internet that are discussed are:
•The serial users that tried to make money out of file sharing. The persistent abuses of file share, such as selling fake copies of an album, or another ways to try to do money with this are completely wrong.
•The artists or musicians don’t get the money from their CDs because people download it from the Internet. In that way, it is very damaging for the artists because they won’t get the profits enough to make shows or tours, and if they cannot do that either their music won’t grow and develop their music.
•File sharing has its consequences and people ought to know it. Singer Lilly Allen, James Blunt and other artists are making a campaign against piracy on the net. The Government would take part in this matter too.
•This generation grew up downloading music as if it was something completely natural. How can we stop teenagers from doing it?
I personally believe that file share isn’t that harmful, because big artists have a lot of money from others things that just their albums (I mean, they sell DVD’s, they do interviews, plus their tours and everything…). However, illegal file sharing is not something that I’m in favor of. I agree with Ed O’Brien when he talks about downloading music in the spirit of discovery, because music lovers share their music that way. I think the real deal is how to differentiate between a serial user, someone who tries to make money out of other’s music, and a passive file share such as teenagers who actually spend a lot on the music industry.
2)Do you ever download music from the Internet for free? If you had to pay for it, would you continue doing it?
Yes, I’ve download music from the Internet for free. If I had to pay for it, I would only still download the music from the bands I’m interested in, and I won’t spend money in music I’m not sure whether I would like or not.
3)Do you ever buy CDs? Why (not)?
Yes, I bought CDs to show my support to my artists. I’ve even bought some Japanese CDs because I am fan of a lot of Japanese bands and it’s actually really difficult to get them. Even though I think everyone should support their band, there are people who can’t afford to do this and it’s unfair that future fans are discriminated because they can’t pay for listening to music.
4)Some bands post their new songs on their websites; do you think this is a good idea?
In my view, this is a particularly smart idea, because it is not illegal and their bands are showing their fans that they trust them. Plus, it is like testing their fans into whether they like their new music or not, so they can have a closer feedback with each other. Also, unknown bands or independents artists are really accustomed to do this because it is a way to get people to listen to their music.
Excellent answers, Victoria! Very good ideas too.

ReplyDeleteFor downloading:
It´s true that the people who just began doing music can upload their music to be known.

ReplyDeleteSome of the artists against file sharing say that this is a problem because some websites abuse it and make money out of piracy. I think that the people that make money out of piracy are wrong, however I don't think that file-sharing (free as it is) is something bad. There's no way it's going to be the ruin of the contemporaty music, I mean, music industry has adapted to file-sharing, these days musicians earn money with live concerts, and people who really like a band still buy there cds, oficcial merchandising or even watch their videos. I think it's a great oportunity for new musicians to show their music to the world.
2) Do you ever download music from the Internet for free? If you had to pay for it, would you continue doing it?
Yes, I do. I'd probably not, If I had to pay it, I would just but a cd.
3) Do you ever buy CDs? Why (not)?
Yes! Sometimes. I think they'd become too expensive, but I always buy one when I have some extra money. Sometimes it's really impossible to buy a cd that you want, for example If I want to buy a CD of a japanese musician, first it's going to be very, very hard to find, and if I do find it, It's going to be incredibly expensive..
4) Some bands post their new songs on their websites, do you think this is a good idea?
I think it's great! It helps making them known, and old-fans really appreciate it.
I agree it's sometimes quite difficult to get the CDs you want to buy, that's why many people resort to downloading them...
Delete1)Thanks internet you can meet a lot of bands and new music, and also if you have a band is the way you can show your music, like a way of start.
ReplyDelete2)I download a lot of music of internet and if I had to pay for it I won't do it.
3)No, I don't buy CDs because I don't have a favourite band so I listen different songs of diferent artists.
4)I think is perfect that idea, like I said before, it's a way of starting.
Thanks, Mariana, better late than never!
