The Olympics

Welcome back! I hope you had a great time over the winter holidays.
As you must know, the 2012 Olimpic Games are being held in Londo right now. In order to introduce the topic, I'd like you to watch this very short video about the history of the games:

I'd like you to focus on the connections between the different historical events/periods mentioned in the video, and how this had impact on the Olympics. Choose one of these, and explain it briefly in a comment below :)

  2. The Olympic Games held in 1936 were in Germany, during the Nazi Government. Hitler tried to ban black and jewish athletes to play on the Games, plus he made them looked like a "big fascist party"; this was the first Games to have symbols like the torch (Hitler associate the Olympic symbols as a synonymous of power, I guess). But his plans got ruined because Jesse Owens, a black runner, won 4 gold medals.

  5. Violence was seen in the Olympics since its inception, although in ancient Greece, wars were brought to a halt during the games for the safety of the spectators and the athletes. The 1916 Olympics was cancelled due to the World War I and the 1940 Summer Olympics and the 1944 Winter Olympics were cancelled due to the World War II. After this war, it apperar the paralympics. A bombing at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta killed two and injured one hundred and eleven people.

  6. The Olympic games of 1916 were cancelled because of World War I, as they were scheduled to take place in Germany. In the Olympics of 1920, Germany and other countries were banned as they were blamed for starting the war.
